Essential Oils

The experience of scent and smell stimulates the oldest, most primitive part of our brain—the Limbic System. The “seat of our emotions”, this is the part of our brain where we house our memories, perceive pain or fear and respond bio-chemically through the distribution of hormones.
The Limbic System is also the only part of the brain that opens to the outside of our body—through our nose. Scents and odors have the power to transport us instantly to the memory of another time and space. They also have the power to influence how we respond to certain situations and stimulus in the here and now.

Essential oils are like the blood of the plant, and like human blood, they carry common properties: oxygen and nutrients responsible for regeneration. They also carry hormone-like chemicals capable of bringing balance to the body/mind.
Most important, essential oils act quickly. Research has shown that we respond to aroma within one to three seconds. Essential Oils have a unique ability to penetrate cell membranes and diffuse throughout the blood and tissues. The molecules of essential oils are small giving them the ability to easily penetrate the cells. When topically applied to the feet, or elsewhere, essential oils can travel throughout the body in a matter of minutes. Diffused into the air, the oils travel directly and immediately to the emotion and hormone regulating center of the brain.

Is there a difference between essential oils available today? Absolutely. Most of what is available to the consumer is cosmetic grade, adulterated oils with little or no therapeutic value. They may also be somewhat toxic due to the chemicals added to increase volume or preserve the oils. Before you purchase and use any essential oils, you should know the following:
• On what quality and condition of organic soil were the plants grown?
• How much time passed from harvest to processing?
• How are the oils extracted? Is low pressure, low temperature steam used?
• Does the distillation take place in a non-reactive, stainless steel distiller?
• You must also know what oils are indicated and contraindicated for pregnancy and use with babies and children.
With the help of an experienced practitioner you can use Essential Oils in the following ways:
• Through massage, establishing a scent as a relaxing trigger to your body/mind
• Diffusing oils into the air ease anxiety and promote wellness
